GSO and MOCI Signed an Agreement for Operating, Developing “Energy Efficiency Label”
The GCC Standardization Organization (GSO) signed an agreement related to the operation and development services for issuing energy efficiency label with the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion in the Sultanate of Oman, on Tuesday, September 14, 2021.
The agreement was signed by His Excellency Dr. Saleh bin Saeed Masan, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion for Commerce and Industry, and His Excellency Mr. Saud bin Nasser Al-Khusaibi, president of The GCC Standardization Organization (GSO).
His Excellency Dr. Saleh bin Saeed Masan explained that the signing of the agreement came as a result of the existing cooperation between the Ministry and GSO in issuing energy efficiency labels for Air Conditioners (ACs) in the Sultanate of Oman since 2019. Which will be reflected in supporting the quality infrastructure in the member states and their implementation mechanisms as well as contributes to facilitate trade exchange and implement Gulf mechanisms.
His Excellency indicated that the agreement includes the services of issuing Omani energy efficiency label, the renewal, review and updating of the label, customs clearance mechanisms, control over products obtained by energy efficiency label in the Omani market, and coordination between the parties benefiting from energy efficiency label issuance services, through the electronic platform of the energy efficiency label issuance system.
His excellency Mr.Saud Al-Khusaibi added that the Energy Efficiency label provides the possibility to verify the data and information of ACs products bearing the energy efficiency label electronically, as well as the ability to display all technical data related to the energy consumption of the AC before purchasing it by the consumer, through the QR code. And obligating all air conditioners dealers and importers to install the new energy efficiency label bearing the QR code on the ACs designated for sale.
His Excellency praised the experience of the Sultanate of Oman in implementing the energy efficiency label issuance programs for ACs, as it is a successful program applied through Gulf mechanisms and it is an incentive for the rest of the member states to complete the unification of the Gulf procedures, which in turn will be reflected in strengthening the Gulf quality infrastructure, and to enhance the facilitation of trade exchange.
Mr. Al-Khusaibi pointed out that the services provided by the energy efficiency label issuance platform are not limited to issuing the label, but go beyond it, to tools that verify the traceability of low-voltage electrical devices and equipment, in addition to the energy efficiency label, and this will facilitate customs clearance procedures, and provide an effective tool for market survey authorities, as well as It provides the consumer with the possibility to verify the reliability of the data before buying.
At the conclusion of his statement, His Excellency Mr. Saud Al-Khusaibi extended his thanks and appreciation to His Excellency Mr. Qais bin Mohammed Al Yousef, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion in the Sultanate of Oman, for his genuine interest in this project, and His Excellency Dr. Saleh bin Saeed, and teams at the Ministry and Directorate General of Standards and Metrology for the support and the assistance provided to make the project a success.
During the event, the electronic platform for issuing Omani energy efficiency label for ACs has been lunched, which contributes to provide electronic services to the industrial and commercial sector, and thus will be reflected in reducing costs associated with conformity assessment procedures and reduce the time and procedural framework necessary at borders. It will also reduce the burdens on importers and manufacturers alike.
The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, represented by the Directorate General of Standards and Metrology, has started applying energy efficiency standards to ACs since 2019 to reduce the carbon emissions of electrical products. Also, the energy efficiency label for ACs helps the consumer to know the air conditioner’s consumption of electrical energy through the number of stars and compare it with other devices.
The consumer can verify the label or obtain more information about the device by scanning the QR code on the label or entering the electronic platform to issue an energy efficiency label via the link http://dgsm.gso.org.sa/eer. The energy efficiency label also shows information about the date of issue, energy efficiency ratio, brand, model number, cooling capacity, as well as annual energy consumption, heating capacity and electrical input capacity. The label also aims to achieve high quality in the performance of air conditioners and increase its life span.
